Thomas De La Rue Essay
Central Bank of Ceylon
with date 1971-1-1

A Thomas De La Rue & Co Ltd Banknote design Essay pair with date 1971-1-1 which was not adopted by the Central Bank of Ceylon for issue of Currency Notes.
No Currency Notes were issued with this date.

Appears to be a modification proposed by Thomas De La Rue to replace the SWRD hand raised issue of 1970 with a politically more acceptable design, the layout is very similar to the 1970 notes in lot of it's detail. They are clearly lot more elegant than the design used for the rushed issue.
The Hand which is the political symbol of the SWRD's Party the SLFP was considered inappropriate to use in BankNotes. The same was however used similarly in the 2009 Mahinda Rajapaksa note. After the rushed issue of 1970 because of the demonetization, the Printing of Ceylon Banknotes was returned to Bradbury Wilkinson which had printed all the BankNotes since the inception of the Central Bank in 1950.
