Currency Notes
The English name The Central Bank of Sri Lanka was adopted in 1986 and
(CBSL) issued in
for circulation, Currency Notes in a series that was called Sri Lanka
Historical and Development.
- In 1986 the Central bank changed it's English Name to Central Bank
of Sri Lanka, which is used for first time in this Series from 1987-01-01.
Same name in Sinhala appears on notes since 1956-7-30
- The Irrigation Dam shown on Rs 1000/- Note was changed to the New
Victoria Dam. Series was named Sri Lanka Historical and Development.
- The Rs500 and Rs1000 notes were redesigned. Identity of Pictorials
which were not given in 1981-01-01, were added like in the
1982-01-01 Notes.
- Bradbury Wilkinson had set up a plant in Biyagama, Sri Lanka in 1984,
and Bradbury Wilkinson was acquired by De La Rue in 1986,
but Bradbury Wilkinson name continues on this series of Currency
Notes till 1990.
- The Specimen notes
for this series had the DeLaRue Specimen NO VALUE logo stamped on them.
- Replacement Notes were used with prefix R/1, R/3, R/4, R/5, R/7, R/8
for denominations Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 100, Rs 500, Rs 1000 respectively.
From 1987-1990 the Number of Notes printed for these denominations was
185M, 50M, 28M, 76M, 21M, 19M. The Rs10 and Rs100 which are the
denominations with the highest mintage have been allocated an
additional prefix R/2 and R/6 which were probabaly never used.
Replacement Notes have been used only by De La Rue. and in this case
Bradbury Wilkinson branch in Sri Lanka under De La Rue management.
Any replacement note date+denominations that the LakdivaCollection
does don't have, or has not been reported with image or shown to me
has been put within brackets untill such time as I find a specimen or
one is reported to me with image as their issue has not been fully confirmed.

- Finance Minister M.H.M.Nainamarikkar on 1988-11-21
is the First English signature on currency notes Since change to
Sinhala with 1956-7-30 dated issue.
- The Red or Yellow UV printing
on front of note changed to Green
from the 1988-11-21 keeping the format unchanged.
- Governor Central Bank of Sri Lanka H.N.S.Karunatillake
signature changed midway of notes dated 1989-02-21 from
one which was thin to normal size with dot at end.
The Rs 10 and the Rs 50 are found with both Varieties for this date.
The Rs 20, Rs 500 and Rs 1000 are found thin and Rs 100 only normal.

The new name of Bank Central Bank of Sri Lanka in Front of Note and
CENTRAL BANK OF SRI LANKA on Back. This format was used from 1987 to 2006
and the Front reverted to all Capitals in 2010.
